Eric Yarnell, ND, RH(AHG) AUTHOR

Dr. Yarnell graduated from Bastyr University in 1996. He completed two years of informal residency in botanical and general naturopathic medicine with Silena Heron, ND in Sedona, AZ and has also practiced in Denver, CO, Phoenix, AZ and Seattle, WA. Dr. Yarnell is an associate professor of botanical medicine at Bastyr University and formerly served as chair of botanical medicine at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine where he also taught urology/men’s health, gastroenterology, and pulmonology. Dr. Yarnell is staff physician at the Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Center focusing on genitourinary cancer patients. He has a private practice focusing on men’s health, urology and nephrology in Seattle. He is also the vice president and co-founder of Heron Botanicals, Inc. in Seattle, WA.

Dr. Yarnell is former senior editor of the Journal of Naturopathic Medicine. He has a regular column in Alternative and Complementary Therapies on clinical application of botanical medicine. He is also author of Natural Approach to Gastroenterology 2nd ed, Naturopathic Urology and Men’s Health and Phytochemistry and Pharmacy for Practitioners of Botanical Medicine. He is a contributing author to Clinical Botanical Medicine 2nd ed, Textbook of Natural Medicine 3rd ed, Principles and Practice of Phytotherapy 2nd ed, and many other works.

Gary Piscopo ND, LAc AUTHOR

Gary Piscopo, ND, LAc is a graduate of Bastyr University in Kenmore, WA, one of the world’s leading academic centers for the study of natural medicine. In addition to completing a four-year doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine and a three-year master’s degree in acupuncture, he also completed an externship in family counseling with Valley Counseling Associates in Renton, WA.

Originally from New England, Dr. Piscopo became interested in natural medicine while involved in medical research during his service in the US military. He completed his pre-medical studies at the University of California, San Diego and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree. His previous work in the medical field includes twelve years of clinical experience in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatric medicine inpatient services, at Charter Hospital, Harborview Medical Center San Diego, and Stevens Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Piscopo is an active member of the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the professional naturopathic organization for the state of Washington, as well as the Washington East Asian Medicine Association.

Through his personal experiences and travels to other countries, Dr. Piscopo has witnessed first-hand the positive impact of education on people’s lives. Because of this, he is a passionate advocate for fostering education – personal, professional, and international. As the previous co-founder and CEO of Healing Mountain Publishing, a premiere publishing house for medical textbooks oriented toward natural and integrative medicine, Dr. Piscopo drew upon almost thirty years of experience in the medical field to support the mission of the extraordinary professionals who work with him in advancing medical education. 

Dr. Piscopo has written several articles on both naturopathic and Chinese medicine and is the author of In Defense of Natural Therapeutics. He previously worked as a consultant to Thomson Micromedex, a provider of evidence-based clinical knowledge solutions for doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other medical professionals.

Together with his wife, Dr. Jacqueline Thomas, Dr. Piscopo founded the Alpine Valley Natural Health Clinic in 1996, which later became the Alpine Valley Wellness Center in 2007. Building on principles of education, effectiveness, and ecology, Dr. Piscopo integrates interventions from conventional, naturopathic, and Chinese medicine together with psycho-emotional approaches such as person-centered therapy, systems family therapy, and narrative therapy in assisting his patients.

Tracy Magerus, ND AUTHOR

Dr. Tracy Magerus graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in exercise and wellness from Arizona State University. During her undergraduate days she discovered naturopathic medicine and was so inspired by the philosophy that she knew that this would be her life’s work. Dr. Magerus received her doctorate in naturopathic medicine from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and completed a one-year general practice residency at the Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center with a focus in women's health.

Dr. Magerus is a member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and also serves on the Board of the Arizona Naturopathic Medical Association. Dr. Magerus has developed numerous study materials with Healing Mountain Publishing for the naturopathic licensing exams. She has a special interest in teaching and continues as adjunct faculty at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine teaching clinical skills and gynecology. She has a private practice in Phoenix, AZ and was honored as one of Phoenix Magazine “Top Docs” for 2013.

In her spare time, Dr. Magerus enjoys many outdoor activities such as gardening, camping and hiking as well as a passion for cooking.

Claire Zimmerman AUTHOR

Dr. Claire Zimmerman received a doctorate in naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University, and a bachelor degress in bilogy and anthropology as Colorado College. She is a registered clinical herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild and reeived training at the North American Institute for Medical Herbalism. 

Taylor Kaufmann, ND AUTHOR

Continually inspired by the healing potential of the body and mind, Dr. Kaufmann followed her passion of education, nutrition and healthcare into Bastyr University’s Naturopathic Medical Program.  She is a certified Medical Herbalist from the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism and spent her undergraduate years at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dr. Kaufmann graduated from Bastyr University and went on to complete a one year residency in family medicine at Bastyr Center for Natural Health. She practices integrative, primary care, family medicine and has received extra training in women’s health, adolescent and pediatric health, cardiovascular disease and diabetes as well as in physical medicine, iv therapy and botanical medicine. Additional interests include chronic and acute disease management, geriatrics, pain management and digestive health.
